Started from Bangalore by 9:50AM and reached Bagdogra Airport around 2:30PM through Kolkata connecting flight. Book the flight tickets 3 months in advance to save 50% on flight cost.
Just before the exit gate at Jaigoan Airport you can find the Prepaid Taxi booth on the left hand side. They will charge Rs 2500 for reserved cab (WagonR mostly) or if you step outside you can find shared cab for Rs 600- Rs 700 per person with a bit bargain. Most it’s a fixed rate per person.
Our Journey started from here and the cab driver was super interested in explaining about the permit procedure and about Bhutan. One the way he stopped for a small tea break, after few hours we entered the forest area and the signage board welcomed us with a warning “Elephant crossing zone”.
Jaigaon is town in West Bengal and located at the country’s border with Bhutan. And one of the main entry to Bhutan by road is from Jaigaon. It’s a small valley on the low lying hills of Mount Himalayas and Toorsa river flows in this city.
Lots of tea estates we will be crossing with lush green environment at most of the places.
Branded shops and small road side markets make the city to look busy and all kind of winter clothes, shoes found at pretty cheap price.
Budget hotels are available just before the entrance of the Bhutan gate for a nominal price and we stayed at Hotel Satyam for Rs 900 / person which is just 50 meters before the Bhutan gate. Lots of hotels available at the Bhutan side also.
